         Yes, holiday lettings (also known as short-term rentals) are legal in Turkey, but with some new regulations that came into effect on January 1st, 2024. Here’s a breakdown of the legalities:

  • Permits are Mandatory:     Previously, holiday lettings operated in a bit of a grey area. Now, it’s mandatory to obtain a special permit from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism before renting out a property for short-term stays (defined as under 100 days).

  • Fines for Non-Compliance: Operating a short-term rental without the proper permit can result in significant fines of up to one million Turkish Lira (around $54,000 USD based on today’s exchange rate).

  • Impact on Travelers: These new rules doesn’t significantly impact travelers. However, it’s always a good idea to check the listing details to ensure the property you’re interested in has the required permit.

So, holiday lettings are legal, but following the proper procedures for obtaining the necessary permit is crucial.
